Philip Smith Why Faith Is a Virtue

What is faith? In what ways might faith be a virtue, a component of a life well lived? How might faith be corrupted and become a vice?
In Why Faith Is a Virtue, Philip D. Smith builds on the work of Alasdair MacIntyre and Robert Adams to argue that faith contributes to human excellence. To make the argument, Smith sorts through conflicting possible «faiths» and shows how some of them are not virtues at all. Nevertheless, he argues that faith, properly understood, contributes to crucial human practices: scientific research, social reform, and parenting. He explains how and why faith is a virtue.

Philip Smith Being at Home in the World

Being at Home in the World is a book of Christian Apologetics. But Mark McLeod-Harrison and Phil Smith don't defend Christian faith; instead, they invite readers into faith. In the course of making this invitation, the authors raise suspicions against modern naturalism, offer respectful criticisms of major religions, and explain how Christian beliefs provide an organizing center of a flourishing human life. Their invitation to Christian faith is philosophically sophisticated, but it is also honest and personal; McLeod-Harrison and Smith tell their own stories of how they grew up as Christians and why they remain believers.

C Drew Smith Reframing a Relevant Faith

Many people expect faith to be inflexible and unchanging. It is relevant because it always has been, at least to them. To admit change is to bring on the end of faith and all of its benefits. Others believe that a relevant faith is by nature shallow and unrooted. Author and educator Drew Smith disagrees. He believes that it is both possible and necessary to reframe faith in such a way that it is relevant to our present society. At the same time, this reframed faith is still a historic faith. It is definitely not shallow and in fact is rooted deeply in the person and teaching of Jesus. Chapters look at why a faith should be progressive, how it can be rooted in the scriptures, the importance of the person of Jesus, and what this means for the mission of the church. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion, making it easy to use this guide in group study. Those who are looking for an alternative to an anti-intellectual and narrow Christianity will find in this book an essential and friendly guide.

Группа авторов Secular Faith

Is faith a necessary virtue in the contemporary world? May it be, or must it be, detached from religious commitment? What do genealogies of the secular tell us about faith? Does religion need secular faith?
Secular Faith brings together leading and emerging scholars to reflect on the apparent paradox of «secular faith.» Ranging over anthropology, religious studies, political science, history, and literature, from Muslims in China to Pentecostals in South Africa to a prison chapel in Texas, this collection of essays is as engaging and accessible as it is penetrating and rigorous.
Communism was once labeled «the god that failed.» Like Christianity, Communism involves faith in a superhuman endeavor, conversion, myth, discipline, and salvation–and, from the perspective of secular liberalism, both are unjustified and false. In recent years, scholars have begun to investigate whether secularism is itself based on faith in a god that failed, or is failing. Nevertheless, many still embrace such a faith, finding in the spirit of democracy an ethos of eternal renewal. Secular Faith enters and broadens this conversation, interrogating secular faith in a global context, tapping new theoretical resources, and grappling provocatively with the tragedies and opportunities of today's profane pantheon of beliefs.

Plato Meno

The «Meno» begins abruptly with a question of Meno, who asks, 'whether virtue can be taught.' Socrates replies that he does not as yet know what virtue is, and has never known anyone who did. 'Then he cannot have met Gorgias when he was at Athens.' Yes, Socrates had met him, but he has a bad memory, and has forgotten what Gorgias said. Will Meno tell him his own notion, which is probably not very different from that of Gorgias? 'O yes-nothing easier: there is the virtue of a man, of a woman, of an old man, and of a child; there is a virtue of every age and state of life, all of which may be easily described.' Here is presented the classic introduction and translation of Benjamin Jowett.

Steve Donaldson Dimensions of Faith

In Dimensions of Faith, cognitive scientist Steve Donaldson takes readers on a journey from the world of assumptions, set minds, widely varying beliefs, and popular misconceptions to an understanding of the true essence and role of faith as the natural and inevitable product of brains. Using numerous illustrations and examples, Donaldson shows how faith is necessitated by a variety of unavoidable limitations, exposes the myth of a divide between faith and critical thinking, provides practical advice for crafting coherent beliefs, and explains why there can never be such a place as «Factland.» Along the way he takes a special look at religious faith–evaluating its attributes, exploring its relation to other manifestations of faith, investigating whether God has done his job well enough to warrant the faith placed in him, and pondering how truth seekers can sometimes end up in very different places.

Plato Meno

Plato’s “Meno” is a Socratic dialogue between the two main speakers, Socrates and Meno, and explores the definition of virtue and whether it is something that can be taught. Meno is an attractive and well-to-do young man visiting Athens and is a student of the sophist Gorgias, who has greatly influenced Meno’s ideas on virtue and knowledge. The dialogue begins abruptly with a question posed by Meno, who asks Socrates whether virtue can be taught. Socrates replies that he does not as yet know what virtue is, and has never known anyone who did. A fascinating and thought-provoking dialogue ensues between Meno and Socrates exploring what exactly virtue is and whether the definition is the same for all people. Meno contends that virtue is dependent on one’s station in life and there is one kind of virtue for men and one for women, one for children, and one for adults. Through detailed and exhaustive questions and answers, Socrates reveals his belief that virtue is the same for all people, whether old or young, man or woman. Socrates then begins to question one of Meno’s slaves to prove his proposition that much knowledge is innate and merely needs to be revealed with the proper questioning, or the Socratic method, rather than taught. This timeless and engaging classic is a must read for all students of philosophy. This edition is translated with an introduction by Benjamin Jowett and includes a biographical afterword.

Nicholas Austin, SJ Aquinas on Virtue

Aquinas on Virtue: A Causal Reading is an original interpretation of one of the most compelling accounts of virtue in the Western tradition, that of the great theologian and philosopher Thomas Aquinas (1224–1274). Taking as its starting point Aquinas's neglected definition of virtue in terms of its «causes,» this book offers a systematic analysis of Aquinas on the nature, genesis, and role of virtue in human life.Drawing on connections and contrasts between Aquinas and contemporary treatments of virtue, Austin argues that Aquinas’s causal virtue theory retains its normative power today. As well as providing a synoptic account of Aquinas on virtue, the book includes an extended treatment of the cardinal virtue of temperance, an argument for the superiority of Aquinas's concept of «habit» over modern psychological accounts, and a rethinking of the relation between grace and virtue. With an approach that is distinctively theological yet strongly conversant with philosophy, this study will offer specialists a bold new interpretation of Aquinas’s virtue theory while giving students a systematic introduction with suggested readings from his Summa Theologiae and On the Virtues .

Joseph F. Smith The Lectures on Faith

The Lectures on Faith is a set of seven lectures on the doctrine and theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, first published as the doctrine portion of the 1835 edition of the canonical Doctrine and Covenants. The lectures were originally presented by Joseph Smith to a group of elders in a course known as the «School of the Prophets.» Lecture 1: Faith gives rise to all human endeavors in both worldly and spiritual matters, and is a source of power, both in man and in God. Lecture 2: The human family's knowledge of God began with God's interaction with Adam before The Fall, which knowledge was retained after The Fall, and which knowledge has been transmitted via human testimony among Adam's descendants. Lecture 3: In addition to a belief in God, a correct knowledge of God's character and attributes as revealed in scripture is necessary for the exercise of faith leading to life and salvation. Lecture 4: From scripture, one can learn that God possesses the following attributes: knowledge, faith (which is His power), justice, judgment, mercy, and truth. Lecture 5: The Godhead, or the collective persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Lecture 6: The knowledge that one's life is in accordance with God's will is necessary for obtaining eternal life Lecture 7: By growing in faith, one draws nearer to God, and in the perfection of faith, one becomes like God. By faith, one obtains knowledge of God, through which knowledge one can receive all things pertaining to life and godliness.

Philip MacDonald The Rynox Mystery

A classic Golden Age crime novel, and the first time Philip MacDonald wrote a crime novel without a detective.‘Rynox’ is at that point where one injudicious move, one failure of judgement, one coincidental piece of bad luck will wreck it. So why would anyone send more than a million pounds in one-pound notes to Mr Salisbury of the Naval, Military and Cosmopolitan Assurance Corporation? Who would shoot F.X. Benedik, the senior partner of the firm, through the head in his study? And where is the choleric Mr Marsh, who had an appointment with F.X. on the night of his death? Rynox is on the edge of big things. But the edge of big things is a narrow edge. And narrow edges are slippery . . .Philip MacDonald’s Rynox is an engrossing murder mystery set in the business world, a crime novel without a detective in which murder and big business are inextricably combined. Beginning with the Epilogue and ending with the Prologue, it is a subtle and exciting book by one of the greatest masters of the mystery story. This Detective Club classic includes a rare introduction by author Philip MacDonald himself, never before published in the UK, and also ‘The Wood-for-the-Trees’, the only short story to feature his series detective, Anthony Gethryn.

Richard W. Kropf Faith: Security and Risk

Is faith a search for security? Is faith the reason for taking risks? The answer to these questions will ultimately determine the quality of our faith – whether it will be a faith that flourishes and grows or a faith that is stunted and limited.
Author Richard Kropf analyzes these faith choices with a unique approach. He combines the psycho-dynamics of Viktor Frankl, the faith analysis of Avery Dulles, and the faith stages researched by James Fowler to provide a provocative foundation for understanding our spiritual life. Kropf then takes us through each faith level and highlights the challenges and pitfalls along the way. He covers the broad range of topics from compulsive religious behavior, «fundamentalism,» and various «enthusiasms,» to adolescent and mid-life crises of faith and the risks of trying to achieve «sainthood.»
'Faith: Security and Risk' is ideal for pastors, spiritual directors, and professional counselors, and is particularly designed to complement spiritual workshops and retreats. Each chapter ends with a series of questions that provide excellent stimulus for small group discussion as well as personal reflection. This book has also proved most helpful for college professors as an excellent text for their students seeking to understand their own faith struggles.
